There are a number of options in the Design View to allow you to fully customize your Soundscape. A Soundscape is built from a number of sound objects which are configured with a volume, location and frequency of playing. From this view you can: Add or remove sound objects from the existing Soundscape. Create new sound objects to add to new or existing Soundscapes. Change the volume, frequency of play, panning and scheduling of the sound objects within your Soundscape. Create a new Soundscape and assign a name, description and image.
The Design View is divided into two tabs: SOUNDS The left hand side of the sounds tab displays the sound objects in this Soundscape, and the Sound objects installed in your BackSounds library. To add an existing sound object into the Soundscape, browse through the tree in the bottom half of the screen and select the sound object to add. Now click the Add button. The sound object will now appear in the list in the top half of the screen. You can add the same sound object as many times as you like. To remove a sound object from the Soundscape, select the sound object in the top half of the screen and click the Remove button. Alternatively, you can click the tick to the left of the sound object to temporarily deactivate this sound object. To edit a sound object in this soundscape, click the Edit button. It is important to note that you are editing the selected instance of the sound object, and not the sound object in the BackSounds library. This allows you to fully customise each sound object instance without affecting the original library version, or instances of the sound object in other Soundscapes.
The right hand side of the sounds tab displays the properties of each sound instance. To configure an instance of a sound object, first select the sound object in the top left hand side of the screen. SCHEDULING To change the volume, adjust the Volume slider accordingly or type a value for the volume into the text box. This volume specifies the master volume for this sound object instance. To specify that the dynamic sounds in this sound object should be played randomly, select the "Play this sound randomly" radio button. Alternatively, to specify that the dynamic sounds in the sound object should be played on a pretimed basis, select the "Use timed events" radio button.
When played randomly, you can increase or decrease the frequency of dynamic sounds by adjusting the "Play with frequency" slider or by typing an input directly. Static sounds will always play constantly, and if the sound object does not contain any dynamic sounds, this option will not be available.
When played on a pretimed basis, select between play every and play once and enter the time and/or interval accordingly. For example, to play the dynamic sound every hour at 15 minutes past the hour, type 01:00:00 and 00:15:00 into the play every boxes. See the Big Ben Clock Soundscape for an example of how to set these values.
To specify that the sound object should activate and deactivate on a timed basis, check the "Use phasing" checkbox. The intervals specified in this section will determine how long a sound object (for example rain) will remain active before fading out and then fading back in again. You can specify whether the sound object begins active when the Soundscape starts by checking the "Sound Object begins active" checkbox.
BALANCE & PANNING SUMMARY The summary tab allows you to provide descriptive information and associate the SoundScape with an image. The Image Url text box is used to specify the internet location of the image file. The Image text box is the name of the image file when stored locally in the BackSounds image cache. The name, author of the Soundscape and a description should be provided in the other fields.
